About Mandalas

Mandala is a Sanskrit word with many meanings: - circle, polygon ,community and connection. Circles suggest wholeness ,completion, eternity, unity, the womb.

Mandalas have been used for centuries as a focus for meditation and healing in many cultures. Native Americans and Tibetans use sand art mandalas formed on the ground, as part of healing rituals and ceremony. Buddhists and Hindus have special sacred mandala designs with specific symbolism that are used as a focus for meditation and again, in sacred rituals. .

Carl Jung the famous psychologist explored mandalas as a tool of healing for himself and his patients. He is quoted as saying ³It is the path to the centre, to individuation..²...Hildegarde von Bingen an 11th century abbess, visionary ,composer and poetess also painted her visions in the form of mandalas. We use  some of her music in the workshops.

Rose windows found in many Christian Cathedrals and churches also are in the form of a mandala consisting of designs, patterns and figures made of coloured glass, when lit by the sun these are magical to behold, making us aware of the power of light and colour and providing a focus for contemplation.

Look into the very architecture of nature and you will discover mandalas everywhere, from a flower to a snowflake, the sun, moon even the earth itself. To look into a mandala you are looking into the well of the universe and in painting a mandala we are re-connecting to the circle of life.

There are some very good sites devoted to mandalas and you will find some of these on my Links page.
